EVOXX BRAZILIAN INTERVIEW - APRIL 2006

1-You´ve been playing for nearly 5 years now, and you already shared the DJ booth with legends such as Sasha, Tiesto and your idol Carl Cox. Something any aspiring DJ dreams of. What reasons you think leaded you to achieve that in such a short time?

It really has been like a dream come true, but I’ve worked very hard & made a lot of sacrifices plus there’s been a lot of luck too! Must be the Irish thing! Hehe! I think what makes me stand out from other Dj’s is my energy, I truly Love Love Love music, I Love to dance, I Love to have fun. Music & dancing makes me so happy and when I’m Djing & making other people dance & happy it makes me go for it even more. People can see that I’m feeling the music & people can feel my energy so I think this has been the biggest factor. I’m very passionate about my dream of being the best Dj that I can possibly be so I work very very hard, practising, promoting, doing my website (www.djclodagh.com), I’m constantly searching for new tracks & sounds, constantly pushing myself. I eat, sleep and dream about it. If you want something bad enough you can achieve it. I still have a long way to go, but I’m ready for it!

2-Carl Cox invited you himself to open his French tour last year. How did that happen? How was your relationship with him during the tour?

Now that was really amazing!!! Carl Cox is my hero and in 2003 I was on a 6 part Dj Competition – Documentary - TV show in the UK called “The Joy Of Decks”. Mr.C was one of the Mentors on the show & after he saw me play he said that I had “Carl Cox potential”, Carl saw the show & liked my energy & attitude & when I emailed him saying I’d love to play with him he replied saying he’d love to hear a demo from me. Then he played at Pacha London in November 2004 & I went down & met him & gave him 2 demos, 1 house, 1 techno. Then in January 2005 he emailed me asking if I wanted to go on tour with him in France in May 2005 as his warm up Dj!!! I nearly fainted when I got that email. My first gig with him was actually in Dublin in my country, Ireland which was really special, then went on to play to 4,000 people in Paris & Strasborg. Then we toured the South of France… Montpellier, Toulouse (where I played inbetween Sasha & Carl), Marseille & finished at the Cannes Film Festival!

I was so nervous when I met Carl at the beginning of the tour, I was shaking! But he was so nice & really put me at ease & told me to never feel pressure from other Djs & play for the people, that they are No.1. Carl’s a great guy, always giggling & laughing! We had a lot of fun on tour & there was lots of amazing parties! He has this unbelievable passion for music & Djing. He’s a huge inspiration for me, we still keep in touch and I wish we’ll play together again some day!

3-You always got into DJ competitions winning most of them, the main one was without doubt The Joy of Decks, what experiences did you get from the whole process?

The Joy of Decks was a real learning experience. It gave me a huge confidence boost & made me believe in myself more, plus people really started to take me seriously as a Dj! Before I went on the show I was very inexperienced, I’d only been Djing 2 years & mainly had just played in my bedroom & at some underground London parties & house parties. Next thing I was up against other Dj’s who had been playing for 10 years, being judged by professional Dj’s like Roni Size, Mr.C, Tom Middleton and Sister Bliss all while being flimed for a TV show which was watched by thousands of people in the Uk and Ireland!! Now that was pressure but at the time I didn’t see it! Looking back now I can’t believe I did it! Hehe! It was the first time I had got to speak with & work with Professional Dj’s & I found out that they are human like you and me, who have dedicated their whole lives to music & have worked extremely hard to get where they are today. It made my dream become more of a reality & more achievable. And of course the best thing to come out of the TV Show was that Carl Cox spotted me! Yeah!

4-You had the experience of playing on mainstream events in front of 4000 people in France and you also play quite often on the London underground techno scene including the squat parties. What does it feel like playing such different venues and crowds? Which one gives you more pleasure?

Having 4,000 people whistle & shout at you is an amazing feeling, then I’ve had a lot of fun playing to 20 people in a small underground techno club in London. It’s so great to experience playing in so many different places, countries & crowds. Eg. Last year one weekend I was playing in a warehouse squat party in London, the next weekend I was playing in the VIP Rooms at the Cannes Film Festival in the South of France??? Hehe! Totally Mad! But I really really don’t care as long as there’s good sound & good party people!

5-You´ve been requested to play in many different countries recently. Where have you played and what are the crowds like?

Already this year I’ve played in Tunisia (twice), Algeria (twice), Poland, Bulgaria, France, Ireland and of course UK. The crowds everywhere have been really great! Imagine I am the first female Dj to ever play in Algeria! How cool is that!! You can read about each gig I’ve played on my website www.djclodagh.com . I loved everywhere I played so far, all special memories in each place but Bulgaria is one country that really stands out for me, the energy of those people dancing was something else, so hard to describe. I was just like WOW!! But I have a good feeling that Brazil will be something very similar! Hehe!

6-You started playing hard uplifting trance, nowadays you play from funky to electronic house, but mainly techno across the board. Is there any style you enjoy more than others?

I love good music full stop! As long as people are happy & dancing… then I’m happy. Eg. In Poland & London I know they like their techno tougher, so I enjoy playing tougher techno. In Bulgaria I’m booked to play a more funky techno set & love playing it. Then in France they like more Electronic house sound & I love playing more electronic there. Then in Algeria & Tunisia I play a more funky and vocal house sound, because that’s what they like there. All I can say is I’m glad I don’t just play one style otherwise I think I would get bored.

7- Some people say that DJs who play different styles havn´t got personality. What do you think of DJs playing different styles?

WHAT!!??? I think a Dj who plays different styles has got lots of personality & shows that they are very open minded & Love all kinds of music. I feel sorry for purists because there is so much great & interesting music out there why limit yourself to just one style or sound?? That can become boring. When you play different styles you can be more creative, keep your sets more exciting & it keeps the dance floor excited, as they don’t know whats coming next! I’d advise every Dj to play different styles. Plus if I just played Techno I would never have played in Tunisia, Algeria, France, Ireland etc, as all those gigs were more “housey” gigs. So I would have missed out on all those fantastic parties!!

8-What qualities do you rate important to be a good DJ?

Good attitude, energy and a huge passion for music & wanting to share that with other people. It’s good to be technical but the TUNES are more important. Always play your best tunes, make every record count. Keep it exciting. Really want to rock every party you play, really play for the people. Give them the best night out ever. The best compliment someone gave me was that I played with my heart. That made me very happy.

9-Who are your favourite DJs and producers?

Yikes, that’s a hard one! DAVE the Drummer, Chris Liberator, Valentino Kanzyani, Mr.C, DJ Markey, James Zabiela, Jeff Amadeus and of course Carl Cox. Each of these Dj’s have inspired me in different ways. Production wise, I have huge respect for anyone who produces… End-Jy, Stephane Signore, Marco Bailey, Deetron, Smith & Selway, DAVE the Drummer, Chris Lib, Cave, Phil Kiernan etc. are all really awesome producers.

10-What was your worst nightmare playing?

My worst nightmare when playing is BAD MONITORS!!! It’s so awful when u can’t hear what you are doing, it’s really unfair & VERY fustrating! I can’t play well if I can’t hear!! I can’t give it 100% …which makes me very sad.

11-Spiritualised ran for more than 3 years in London, which isn´t an easy task as London holds dozens of parties every weekend. What made Spiritualised live for so long? How important was Spiritualised for your career?

Even though we don’t make as many parties as before, Spiritualised still lives on due to a really cool close group of friends who all love good dance music. We stood out because people could see how much effort we put into our parties to make the night special, it’s mainly word of mouth, friends of friends which make the atmospheres at the parties so wicked!!! We now keep the parties for special occasions and hold about 5 parties a year. I’d advise every Dj to try promoting a night at some stage. It’s a lot of hard work & very stressful but a huge learning experience. You really find out how much money & effort it takes to run a night so you’ll have a new respect for other promoters when you go and play for them. You’ll learn a lot of different things from sound and lighting, to decorations and safety stuff. Plus you will have a residency at your own party, regular gigs which is the best experience of all!

12-We had Dave Clark recently in Brazil. He played only CDs and said that you get on the CD decks the same features you get on the turntables, besides the fact that you take more music on CDs than on the heavy vinyl cases. What´s your view about this issue? Which one do you prefer playing?

Dave Clarke is an amazing Dj & so is Carl Cox, both Dj’s, along with many other Djs play just CD’s now & they rock parties all over the world. Chris Liberator, DAVE the Drummer, Dj Rush & Sven Vath are all amazing Dj’s, all play just vinyl & rock parties all over the world. Richie Hawtin & Sasha use laptops, both are amazing Djs & rock parties all over the world. The point being everyone is different & have their own preference how to Dj but it doesn’t really matter as long as they are playing good music & making people dance & happy! I play both but mainly vinyl because I’m more used to it but I think Cds and Mp3 are the future plus they are definetly much easier to travel with, it’s lighter plus less chance of record bags going missing & stolen as you can carry everything with you, plus you can carry so much more music with you. I LOVE vinyl but Cds & Mp3’s are the future whether we like it of not!

13-It´s your first time in Brazil, tell us what do you know about the Brazilian scene. DJs, labels, clubs, producers, crowd, festivals.

Wow Wow Wow, I can’t wait to play in Brazil! I have a lot of Brazilian friends in London & you can always spot the Brazilians at the parties in London because of their energy. Dancing like crazy… real party people so I can’t even imagine how crazy the parties will be with a whole club full of Brazilians! Now that’s going to be FUN! Hehehe!!

Anderson Noise and Renato Cohen are great Techno Dj’s & producers, also Dj Markey is one of my favourite Dj’s, I saw him play at a festival in the UK a few years ago & he just blew me away! I’d also like to see Dj Murphy. As for the Clubs, well, I heard there are some beautiful clubs eg. Lov.E, D-Edge & Warung which I hope to check out while I’m there. Festival wise I heard Skol Beats is a top festival, I hope to go someday! My friend Lucy just came back from Djing in Brazil & told me I’m going to LOVE it, so I can’t wait!

14-Your debut in Brazil will be at Evoxx, and you´re playing a different set from your usual stuff, a blend of hard trance, techno and acid. How do you describe your music as a whole?

100% pure energy! Powerful & Strong, Pumping High Energy Dance Music is the best way to describe my sound. Music that makes people dance like crazy, hands in the air and of course… lots of fun! YEAH! A big thank you to Franky & Fabio & the Evoxx crew for inviting me to play, it’s going to be a wicked night!

15-How do you see yourself in a few years time?

Being the best that I can be, rocking parties all over the world! I hope I will be producing some really kick ass tracks & running my own record label plus playing LIVE.

So watch out world here I come! Hehe! See you soon Brazil!! Can’t wait! xx
