ULTRATECH CZECH INTERVIEW WITH DJ ZYGY

Hi Clodagh, how are you? :)

Hi Zygy! I’m great thanks & thank you for this interview!

How did you become a DJ and how long have you played?

I am Irish but moved to London in 1999 where i discovered dance music. I used to go out every weekend dancing to Trance, House & Techno! I loved it all. Then i met my spanish ex-boyfriend Nacho. We both loved music & dancing and wanted to Dj so we saved up and bought decks in 2001 & started Djing & making parties called Spiritualised! So now i have been Djing about 5 years!

You are from Ireland and I think that many people in the Czech Republic don't know much about dance scene in the Ireland. Can you describe it shortly? Is there something specific?

When I left Ireland in 1999 I didn’t know what Trance or Techno or House music was. There wasn’t much of a dance scene in Ireland, just chart music & rock! I lived in London for 7 years & just moved back to Ireland 2 weeks ago. There is definitely a young scene here in Ireland now & it’s growing all the time. I went to a big dance festival this summer in the center of Ireland called HiFi & it was wicked, all the top top Djs were here & the festival was packed! So i’m really looking forward to playing lots of gigs here in the future. Trance seems to be huge with some good techno & house nights too! There are a lot of very talented young dance music producers breaking through at the moment. So watch this space!

Can you say something about your cooperation with Carl Cox?

In 2003 i was on a TV show in the UK called „The Joy Of Decks“ it was a 6 part TV Show & Dj Competition. I got picked out of 300 people & worked with Sister Bliss from Faithless. Carl Cox spotted me on this TV show & liked my energy & attitude then after a few emails & demos he asked me to be his warm up Dj on tour with him in France in 2005! It was amazing as Carl is my Hero & he’s such a great person & Is what every dj should be... Loves music, loves people & wants to make them happy! He’s really busy but we still keep in touch by email & texts & hopefully i’ll get to play with him again someday!

You've played in many countries but never in the Czech Republic. Ultratech will be your first gig here. What's your feeling? Do you know something about the Czech Republic?

I’m really excited & can’t wait to play in Czech Republic, i’ve never been there before. I’ve heard the people are great & the country is beautiful. I really love playing in Bulgaria & Poland because of the people & if Czech Republic is similar i know i will love it!

You've played in countries such as Algeria and Tunisia. Surely you must have a lot of experiences from there. How people from countries like Tunisia or Algeria react on your music?

Tunisia & Algeria are great, I mainly play House music there... all kinds of House & maybe some softer Techno. I am actually the first female Dj ever to play in Algeria! & my favourite place to play is the city of Oran. The people are so nice & really up for it, they dance like crazy, hands in the air, jumping & shouting! It’s sooo much fun & i’m really lucky to play there as not many tourists are allowed into Algeria as it’s very difficult to get a Visa! There’s lots of photo’s on my website www.djclodagh.com so you can see all the different countries i’ve played from Tunisa to Algeria, Brazil to Italy, Poland to Ibiza, Morocco to Bulgaria & soon Czech Republic!! Yeah!

You won DJ competition in 2002 after only eight months of djing. After that you have been successfull in many other competition. Can you say something more about that?

I love a challenge & after 8 months of Djing I entered in a Dj comp, i played trance, hard house, techno, acid techno & gabba & i WON!! Hehe! Then everyother Dj comp i enerted I won. Trevor Rockcliffe’s Techno DJ comp & a House Dj Comp where i got to go play in Berlin. Then the TV Show happened! Winning these competitions gave me a lot of confidence & i would encourage any up & coming Dj to enter in Competitions as it’s really great experience & shows you can play under a lot of pressure. That is one of the reasons Carl Cox asked me to go on tour with him as he saw i could handle a lot of pressure being in a Dj Competition on TV with a TV camera on me & having thousands of people watching me! ...Plus Dj Competitions are lots of fun!

What about you and your production? Do you have any material?

I made one track 3 years ago on the TV Show with Sister Bliss but it was never released. I have just finished setting up my studio in Ireland & plan to start producing & getting a LIVE set together. I’m really excited & can’t wait to start!

Your friends gave you a name Super Clodagh for your life energy. You can dance all night and after one hour of sleeping go to work. Will you only play in the Czech Republic or also dance as a gogo? :)

Hehe! Me when I DJ I can’t stop dancing & moving, the music just takes over & i’m really happy & have a lot of fun with the people! Thats what a party is about after all. I love to dance so when i’m finished playing i’ll be dancing like a gogo on the dancefloor so you better have your dancing shoes on Zygy!!

See you soon Czech Republic!! xx
