PIGFEST INTERVIEW OCTOBER 2008

  • During the Joy of Decks TV series you had some help from Sister Bliss from Faithless. Was there one piece of advice she gave you particularly stuck in the memory?

The Joy Of Decks was an amazing experience, it was a 6 part TV series & Dj competition where 4 professional Dj’s were mentors to 4 up & coming Dj’s, to try turn them into professional DJ’s. Mr.C, Roni Size, Tom Middleton & Sister Bliss were the mentors. I’ll always be very greatful to Bliss for picking me to work with, but to be honest I didn’t get to spend much time with her as she was working on the new faithless album at the same time so it was a case of a few hours filming & then see ya later. She’s a great Dj & extremely talented musician, all the Faithless tracks are amazing… so many classics. I learned loads from being on that TV show, meeting many professional Djs, seeing how a TV show is put together, playing to crowds of up to 1,000 people, playing in Ibiza, working in a professional studio & making a track… the list goes on.

You were the warm up DJ for Carl Cox on his European tour (a wet dream for most DJs); how did that all come about?

The best thing about the Joy Of Decks TV show is that I was spotted by Carl Cox & we exchanged a few emails & I told him I really wanted to warm up for him, so at his next London gig I went there & met him & gave him two mix demos. But I didn’t hear back from him so I though to myself, he mustn’t have liked them, but then 3 months later he sent me an email & asked me if I wanted to go on tour with him all over France, playing at his amazing Carl Cox & Friends parties warming up crowds of over 4,000 people!! Even though I didn’t win the Joy of Decks TV Show, I got an even better prize going on tour with Carl & from that I got to play with Sasha & Tiesto plus loads more gigs came out of it too. I learned loads from Carl, mainly picking up on his excitement for Djing & music & people & the scene. It was very inspiring. What you see is what you get with Carl.

Ireland has produced countless great poets, writers and musicians, but very few DJs (yourself & Fergie the only 2 I can think of). Why do you think that is?

Sadly the club scene isn’t that big in Ireland. There is also the problem that clubs have to shut at 2am!! It’s the law! I hardly ever play in Ireland which is really sad, but there are a lot of good Irish Dj’s & LIVE acts, eg. Japanese Popstars, Rhythm Technologies, Hystero, Jon O’ Callaghan, Donnacha Costello etc.

How do Eastern European crowds compare to the UK?

I tell everyone that Eastern Europe is the best because of the party people. There is a great excitement about the music, their energy is amazing, they like to party & they dance like crazy… A Dj’s dream really! I LOVE playing in Poland, Bulgaria, Slovakia & Czech Republic! I wish I could play there every weekend… J

You've played to 1,000 at a gig in Tunisia & ALgeria (is that right?) It's a very modern and liberal muslim country, but alcohol and drugs are banned and generally shunned. What was the crowd like there, compared to the generally mashed up and messy lot in Europe?

I’ve played many times in Tunisia & Algeria, infact I’m the first woman Dj ever to play in Algeria. I wouldn’t say alcohol is banned as they were many people drinking at the parties I played at & it seemed normal, but you are right it’s definitely not as messy. I play mainly house music in these countries, the music is more funky & vocal & slower than techno, so there is a different vibe but people still dance like crazy. They certainly know how to party & they are great dancers, lots of sexy hip shaking! I’m lucky I play different music & get to play in different clubs, countries & experience different things. It’s great!

Who are your 3 favorite DJs and why?

No.1 is Carl Cox – because of his energy & how he genuinely plays for the crowd.

    2. Dave the Drummer – He’s an all round brilliant Dj, musician, producer, party animal etc. Who else can play 3 decks, play Live, produce amazing tracks, run 2 record labels, plays as a drummer in a band, the list goes on… he’s so talented.

    3. It’s a toss up between Jeff Amadeus & Dj Murphy… both have amazing skillz!!!

Which tracks are rocking your record box at the moment?

I’m really loving Smith & Sleways remix of Kevin Saunderson’s “ROCK TO THE BEAT”. Really wicked track... J

What is your all time favorite dance track?

This is an impossible question to answer… maybe “Insomnia” by Faithless… such a classic.

    Best gig ever?

Loads of brilliant gigs all for different reasons but the top one was probably playing after Sasha & before Carl Cox at the INOX festival in Toulouse in France. It was amazing plus my sisters & 3 friends travelled over from London especially just for the night to support me!

    Favorite DJing memory?

Soooooo many, playing at my own night Spiritualised, at the awesome Fortress Studios in London, we put on some really special parties. Warming up for Luke Slater in Bulgaria for the Invader crew in Sofia. Being the first woman Dj to ever play in Algeria & playing some amazing parties in Oran. Playing to 5,000 people in Czech at the brilliant Apokalypsa party. Being on the Joy Of Decks Tv Show. Warming up for Carl Cox in Dublin with some of my old school friends who don’t like dance music, jumping up & down on the dance floor! Playing an amazing 4 hour set in Marseilles in La Bazar club. Playing a wicked 5 hour set in Tunisia, I just didn’t want to stop. Warming up 4,000 people in the Zenith in Paris & Carl Cox giving me a big hug saying well done. The list is endless…

Wierdest/strangest thing to happen to you as a DJ?

So many weird things have happened to me I could write a book, but definitely the weirdest thing happened when I was playing a charity squat party in Stratford, London, in aid of the TUSANMI victims which had happened a few weeks earlier. I had just started my set when this man walked up to the decks with something like a baseball bat & started to smash up the mixer while I was playing, just missing my head by a few inches. Needless to say I ran, pulling my headphones out of the mixer, I was shaking, everyone just stood there thinking… “what the hell??!!” then the guy left & I was like, oh shit, my records!! So I ran up to the decks but my records were fine & the biggest joke of all was the mixer was fine too… it was a hardcore squat techno mixer & I couldn’t believe it was still working because this guy really tried his best to smash it up. So I decided to try to keep playing but then the party shut down, because it wasn’t safe to continue. It turn out that the guy owned the building that the party was happening in & he was not very happy as obviously nobody asked his permission etc. but at the end of the day the guy could have killed me, so yes that was definitely the weirdest thing that ever happened to me while Djing! I can laugh about it now but it was really scary!
